IMPORTANT
Please note that Expharm Pro (the latest version of ExPharm) is launched on 19th Dec 2011 by Elsevier India. After the launch, the new version will be available for testing. Since the new version will be available shortly, the distribution of older versions of ExPharm, EPDog, EPOeso and EPHeart are discontinued with effect from 17 Dec 2011. Sorry for the inconvenience mates; start using the new version. The beta version of ExPharm pro is freely accessible/usable for about a month at the following site:
ExPharm
2.0 for DOS
ExPharm 2.0 for DOS is written for IBM PC and its
compatibles. It can simulate the following experiments:
-
Effects of drugs on the isolated heart of frog
-
Effects of drugs on blood pressure, heart rate and
respiratory rate of dog
-
Effects of drugs on locomotor activity of rats
-
Effects of drugs on ciliary motility of frog esophagus
-
Effects of drugs on rabbit eye
-
Evaluation of analgesics using mice (Hot plate method)
-
Dose response curve and matching assay
These interactive
simulation programs are meant for undergraduates studying Pharmacology. They
are aimed at giving a good understanding of drug actions and helping the
user remember them better. The programs are menu driven and each one has
both tutorial as well as examination modes to be chosen by the user.
In the examination
mode the user is given a few unknown drugs to identify. Procedure and
instructions in detail are available for each experiment at the main menu.
When performing any of the simulated experiments the user can decide the
sequence of drug administration. In some experiments the drug doses are
fixed and in others it is open to the user to decide. Drug responses are
subject to biological variations. Unknown drugs, provided by the program are
randomly selected from the list of available drugs.
The user is
expected to record and tabulate the readings manually during experiments. A
model table is available for each experiment in the tutorial mode. At the
end the user is to draw conclusions and answer some questions which appear
on the screen.
ExPharm 2.0
provides not only an inexpensive but also an easy way of demonstrating drug
effects on different animal preparations. This would be useful for both
teachers and students in an environment where the use of animals is
restricted due to various reasons.
